2nd Year Basketball Success

The 2nd year basketball team were hugely successful this year, following on from a very impressive season last year which saw them crowned as South East Champions and progress to the All-Ireland playoffs. This year they were yet again very impressive in the South East League with victories over Loreto Wexford, Presentation Wexford, Our Lady of Lourdes Rosbercon and Presentation de la Salle Bagenalstown which let them progress to the South East Final. Here, they encountered a very strong Grennan College team from Thomastown who benefited from the inclusion of a number of club basketball players. Unfortunately, Grennan proved too strong on the day; however our team progressed to represent the region at the All-Ireland playoffs which once again were hosted by Kinsale Community School and Intermediate School Killorgin. The day started on a positive note with a victory over Caritas College. They then progressed to play Intermediate School Killorgin who had beaten Kinsale Community School earlier in the day and were the favourites to win the competition. What followed was an outstanding game of basketball where a last-second basket from Katie Byrne drew the game at half-time. This led to extra time where Orlagh Hickey showed remarkable resolve to point a free throw which won the game. Unfortunately, in the last match of the day a very physical Kinsale side proved too strong, though this performance sees the FCJ team ranked joint fourth in Ireland and must surely give great hope of future success for the school with this talented side. Thanks to Ms. Dunne & Mr. Earls for their dedication and commitment to the team.
