Student Wellbeing

Welcome to F.C.J. Student Wellbeing page.

We, in F.C.J. Secondary School, put Student Wellbeing at the centre of all we do. Student Wellbeing is crucial to your child reaching his/her potential during their school years. Students learn about wellbeing through specific areas of the curriculum and various Wellbeing events and initiatives that are organised in school to develop awareness, knowledge and skills about Wellbeing.

They learn for Wellbeing when their whole experience of school life, including all the day-to-day interactions both within and beyond the classroom, is respectful and caring. Thinking about learning for Wellbeing requires that we consider not only what students learn but also how they learn it. Learning for Wellbeing can be nurtured in all subjects and by all teachers.

The Framework for Junior Cycle (2015) states that “The Junior Cycle years are a critical time in young peoples’ lives. Students are exposed to a range of influences, including peer pressure. They require support to make positive responsible decisions relating to their health and wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. Wellbeing in Junior Cycle is about young people feeling confident, happy, healthy and connected.”

Student Wellbeing is at the heart of the vision of a new Junior Cycle and at the heart of everything F.C.J.

In F.C.J. we take the Wellbeing of our students very seriously. We believe that learning only fully happens when students are safe, well and happy.

Therefore, to this end our “Wellbeing Staff Team” are working on a “Wellbeing Policy” for our school.

We are also in the process of forming a “Student Wellbeing Committee”. In addition a survey of student opinion, targeting Second and Fifth years, will be carried out in the second term. The voice of the student will guide our work on Wellbeing into the future.

We will also be surveying parents/guardians of Second and Fifth students and your views will also be considered.

Finally, a staff survey will complete our research of views , and all views will inform our “Wellbeing Policy”.

In addition, a Wellbeing Wall has been designed and will be a focal point in our school to promote and bring to the students’ attention all things associated with Wellbeing. The wall has been designed and painted with the help of a number of 6th Year Art students; Norah McGinty, Louise Osborne, Jack Ring, Aoife Dunne, Róisín O’Sullivan, Katie Byrne, Nicole McGrath, and Eimear O’Donohoe.

Please visit our “Student Wellbeing” page on our website for regular updates on the work we will be doing, now and in the future.

You and your children will also find links to outside agencies for information and help in the area of all things Wellbeing.

Looking forward to our continued work on Wellbeing!

Ms. Eileen Murray

Student Wellbeing Coordinator.
